1. After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. 이 후에 여호와의 말씀이 이상 중에 아브람에게 임하여 가라사대 아브람아 두려워 말라 나는 너의 방패요 너의 지극히 큰 상급이니라

# thy {따이} : 당신의 your.

2. And Abram said, LORD God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 아브람이 가로되 주 여호와여 무엇을 내게 주시려나이까 나는 무자하오니 나의 상속자는 이 다메섹 엘리에셀이니이다

# thou {따우} : 당신 you. 단수 주어.

3. And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 아브람이 또 가로되 주께서 내게 씨를 아니주셨으니 내 집에서 길리운 자가 나의 후사가 될것이니이다

# heir {에어} : 상속인, 계승자. air와 발음이 똑같다. 그래서 시험에 종종 나온다. 헤어라고 읽지 말 것! h가 묵음.
 
4. And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 여호와의 말씀이 그에게 임하여 가라사대 그 사람은 너의 후사가 아니라 네 몸에서 날 자가 네 후사가 되리라 하시고

# thine {따인} : 당신의 your, 당신의 것 yours.
# bowel {빠울} : 창자라는 뜻이 있는데, 이 문장에서는 그런 뜻은 아니고 내부라는 뜻도 있는데, 딱히 어울리지 않는다. 다른 번역 성경들은 이 단어를 몸 body의 의미를 풀고 있다.

5. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 그를 이끌고 밖으로 나가 가라사대 하늘을 우러러 뭇별을 셀 수 있나 보라 또 그에게 이르시되 네 자손이 이와 같으리라

6. And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. 아브람이 여호와를 믿으니 여호와께서 이를 그의 의로 여기시고

7. And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. 또 그에게 이르시되 나는 이 땅을 네게 주어 업을 삼게 하려고 너를 갈대아 우르에서 이끌어낸 여호와로라

# thee {띠이} : you의 단수 목적격.

8. And he said, LORD God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? 그가 가로되 주 여호와여 내가 이 땅으로 업을 삼을 줄을 무엇으로 알리이까

9. And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 나를 위하여 삼년 된 암소와 삼년 된 암염소와 삼년 된 수양과 산비둘기와 집비둘기 새끼를 취할찌니라

# heifer {헤퍼} : 어린 암소
# turtledove {터들더브} : 멧비둘기, 산비둘기. 의좋은 부부 혹은 연인을 뜻하기도 한다.

10. And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not. 아브람이 그 모든 것을 취하여 그 중간을 쪼개고 그 쪼갠 것을 마주 대하여 놓고 그 새는 쪼개지 아니하였으며

11. And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away. 솔개가 그 사체 위에 내릴 때에는 아브람이 쫓았더라

# the fowls : 한글성경들(현대인의성경, 새번역, 공동번역, 개역개정, 개역한글)에는 솔개라고 나오는데, 영어성경들(NIV, NASB)에는 the birds로 나온다.
# carcase : 영국식 영어표기다. carcass {카아커스} 죽음 짐승의 사체.
 
12. And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. 해질 때에 아브람이 깊이 잠든 중에 캄캄함이 임하므로 심히 두려워하더니

13. And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not their's, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 여호와께서 아브람에게 이르시되 너는 정녕히 알라 네 자손이 이방에서 객이 되어 그들을 섬기겠고 그들은 사백년 동안 네 자손을 괴롭게 하리니

# surety {슈어러티} : (고어) 확실. of a surety 확실히.
# afflict {어플릭트} : 괴롭히다, 학대하다.

14. And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. 그 섬기는 나라를 내가 징치할찌며 그 후에 네 자손이 큰 재물을 이끌고 나오리라

15. And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. 너는 장수하다가 평안히 조상에게로 돌아가 장사될 것이요

# shalt {셜트} : (고어) shall. 주어가 thou(you)일 때 씀.
  
16. But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. 네 자손은 사대만에 이 땅으로 돌아 오리니 이는 아모리 족속의 죄악이 아직 관영치 아니함이니라 하시더니

# hither {히떠} : (문어) 여기로 here.
# iniquity {이니쿼리} : (격식) 사악.

17. And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. 해가 져서 어둘 때에 연기 나는 풀무가 보이며 타는 횃불이 쪼갠 고기 사이로 지나더라

# furnace {뻐니스} : 난로, 용광로, 화덕.

18. In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 그 날에 여호와께서 아브람으로 더불어 언약을 세워 가라사대 내가 이 땅을 애굽강에서부터 그 큰 강 유브라데까지 네 자손에게 주노니

19. The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 곧 겐 족속과 그니스 족속과 갓몬 족속과

20. And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 헷 족속과 브리스 족속과 르바 족속과

21. And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.  아모리 족속과 가나안 족속과 기르가스 족속과 여부스 족속의 땅이니라 하셨더라
